Kitesurfing Lessons FAQ's
What is Kitesurfing?
Kitesurfing is the latest and most exciting extreme watersport to hit the UK shores. Using a large kite for power, you can propel yourself along the water at speed on a small board with footstraps (similar to a wakeboard). The many different styles of kitesurfing (wake, surf, old school, new school, cruising, speed) is what attracts so many people to the sport. All you need to kitesurf is wind and water, which we have plenty of here in the UK.
Do I need previous sports experience?
No, we will teach you everything you need to know.
What facilities do we have?
Changing room, hot shower and free car parking.
Is it dangerous?
Kitesurfing along with any sport has a risk element to it. With the new Bow and Hybrid kites that we use along with the experience of our instructors we run a very safe kiteschool. All of our lessons run in a relaxed and controlled enviroment making sure no one is ever in a dangerous situation.
Is there an age or weight limit?
You will need to be over 50KG to control a kitesurfing kite and over 18. We can take over 16s if a parent is present.
What makes our school unique?
This year we have built shower and changing room facilities for all to use before and after lessons. We have free car parking. All of our equipment is bought new every year - so you don't need to suffer learning to kitesurf on aging, damaged kites or old ill-fitting wetsuits.
What time do lessons start and how long is each session?
Kitesurfing lessons are run at low tide therefore lesson times will change daily. We will arrange a time that will work best for you as we appreciate that some people have longer journeys than others. Most group lessons run for 4 - 5 hours.
Do you have insurance and will I be insured during my lesson?
If you are doing a Lesson with us you will be insured by us!!!
Every Kitesurfer should have insurance. Most beaches and clubs won't let you kitesurf unless you can prove you have valid insurance. The IKO offer Kitesurfing specific insurance without breaking the bank. It's priced in US dollers but will come through in GB pounds when purchased through Paypal (check online news feeds for latest exchange rates). Official IKO members benefit from:
How many people will be on a course?
We teach up to between 2-3 people per instructor. Midweek lessons are usually quieter than the weekends.
Where can I stay?
There are lot's of hotels available in the centre of Southampton or Portsmouth, we are around 10mins drive from either city. There are also many guesthouses and B+B's at Lee=on-Solent which is where we are based.
